When I began exploring what was happening with IABC in the Middle East I think I raised more red flags than excitement. Others have been working on the region, and, well I am not in a formal leadership role right now. So why am I getting involved?

I heard a lot of “it won’t work if certain people aren’t involved” and “the volunteer leaders aren’t there” and “this person thinks it has to work this way” and “networking isn’t in the culture.”

No, no, no. Too many excuses.

Someone just has to frame the vision and lead. Start somewhere. What benefit is there to waiting if there are people who want a new development opportunity, a connection bigger than themselves? Let them get started and grow it to meet local needs.

I think the passion and interest is there, it just needs a nudge in the right direction. And support and encouragement.

There are some very talented, thoughtful and potentially inspiring people there. Many came from elsewhere but have called the UAE home for many years.

Who are we to say it won’t work? Sixteen people in my workshop (many Arabs and UAE nationals) all expressed excitement at new networking opportunities. Then, six people at lunch a few days later – some IABC members some not – were interested enough to plan their next brainstorming meeting. People are already beginning to connect on their own. Let’s listen and support, even help them to lead.
